Vacuna Ruc is an imaginary User Experience project that would help the Catalan government efficiently carry out the inoculation campaign against COVID-19. The native app would be the first of its kind to provide end-to-end vacccination process in Catalonia, from booking an appointment to generating a digital passport for multiple users. Vacuna Ruc is a compact and easy to use app, integrating core features of other existing apps in the Catalonia digital health ecosystem into a single accessible platform.

The main goal of the app was to reduce the stress from the offline team and get at least 35% of the population onto our app. Released in three phases, it is ensured to be put to use as soon as possible. It is utilitarian, fast, and easy to use for the larger population. Most importantly, it is modular and is able to adapt rapidly to the new developments of the pandemic.

01 Ecosystem Analysis

01

Ecosystem analysis gave us an overall insights into Catalonia’s digital health framework. We found a lot of functional redundency in each app. Additionally, each app has one specific function and the existance of numerous platforms confuses the user. Our app integrates functions from existing apps and allows the user to get information, take action, and track status all-in-one platform.

02 Benchmark Analysis

After understanding the gap in the ecosystem, we performed benchmark analysis on 12 Covid-19 vaccination applications, globally, to understand the functionalities that currently exist in the standard market. We compared each for the strenghts, weaknessnes, and limitations, and found that here was no application that integrates comprehensive functionalities for the vaccination process that is also secure (non-intrusive) and accessible to the public. Our application needed to have these core functionalities:

1. End-to end vaccination process – to provide a one stop service for the users

2. QR code passport certification – as accessible digital verification

3. Comprehensive learning materials – provide accurate information as well as transparency to generate trust for the public about the pandemic and vaccine

4. Different languages – to cater to the international population of the region

5. Biometric Registration – to ensure correct vaccine allocation

03 User Personas

The app needs to be launched as soon as possible thus it should first target those in the priority group in Phase One who will be the first to get vaccinated. I interviewed 17 people and we created five personas: 1) healthcare worker, 2) 65+ group that are willing to be vaccinated, 3) 65+ group with low incentive for vaccination, 4) 65+ that are misinformed, 5) children of 65+ that will be helping their parents to sign up.

Main takeaways are that there are lack of reliable information about vaccine, 65+ group with low digital literacy need help signing up, and that the current vaccination process is time consuming and complicated .

04 Sitemap

There will be 5 main pages that are accessible from home screen which include: scheduling an appointment, Covid-19 pandemic and vaccination-related information, profile selections, side effects, and utilities (like settings). “Onboarding”, “create account”, and “support” are ultility pages – they can be accessible to the user at all times.

05 Wireframe

Wireframes selected are an overview of the app including: onboarding process, creating an account, booking an appointment, reporting side effects, and viewing vaccination passport. The user is guided by a donkey, a familiar Catalan mascot, throughout the whole user journey. Sitemap and userflow was done with the team previously before me and another group member divided 200 wireframes to design between us.

05.1

Onboarding:

This takes the user through the app, helping them set up their language preference, informing them about that app’s functionalities, and how to get support whenever the user is stuck. It also introduces the user to the homescreen which allows the user to book appointment or read more information about the pandemic and the vaccines.

05.2

Create Account:

Vacuna Ruc offers satellite profiles, meaning that vaccination can be scheduled for multiple users. For securing reasons, the app needs to know who the admin is and verify their identity (either manually or via scanning an identification card). After an account is created, the admin could choose who they want to schedule an appointment for.

05.3

Schedule Appointment:

In this stage, the donkey prompts the user to answer a series of questions in order to check eligibility and the vaccination stage the user belongs in. If the user is eligible, then the earliest appointments for both shots (30 days apart) are autogenerated for optimal of the booking process. The user also has the option to modify and choose their most convinient appointment based on time and location. After completion, digitalised appointments are generated for the user with the option to share and print.

05.3

Side effects check-in:

Personalised health check-up for the user by sending them a notification after the vaccination and letting them grade their symptoms. This feature assures the user that mild symptoms are common and alert them when the symptoms require medical attention.

05.4

Vaccination Passport:

Vacuna Ruc offers satellite profiles, meaning that vaccination can be scheduled for multiple users. For securing reasons, the app needs to know who the admin is and verify their identity (either manually or via scanning an identification card). After an account is created, the admin could choose who they want to schedule an appointment for.
